The worst nightmare of any outdoor sports enthusiast is to get caught in a difficult weather unprepared. Every year, there are campers, hikers and trekkers that find themselves in the same situation. Don’t make the mistakes they did. If you don’t want to suffer the consequences of being unprepared for an outdoor activity, make sure you follow these important tips.
Whatever activity you are planning to, be it camping, fishing, hiking or a backpacking trip, keep these tips in mind:
1. Follow the weather forecasts
As you prepare for the outdoor activity, be sure to monitor weather news. Watch out for abrupt changes in the weather. If you know what to expect, it is easier to determine which types of outdoor clothing you should be packing.
2. Leave a message
If you planning to go in an isolated place or somewhere no one can reach you by phone, be sure to leave a message to a friend or relative. Let them know where you will be, what you will be doing, how long you will be away. This way, people would knowhow and where to reach you in case of emergency.
3. Put on outdoor clothing in layers
Layering is a dressing technique that allows you to stay cool during summer and warm during winter. When putting on outdoor clothing dress in three layers. The first layer is the base layer; next is mid or insulating layer then the outer or shell layer. This trick usually involves adding and shedding pieces of clothing to easily adjust with the changes in the temperature and activity level.
Rules to Follow When Dressing in Layering
Base Layer: The base layer is the layer closest to your skin – you undergarments. Though hey constitute a small part in your apparel, choosing the right layer for the base can boost your comfort level. Non-cotton fabrics are most recommended for the base-layer. Non-cotton fabrics are ideal because they don’t absorb water. Hence, heat can be easily retained in the body for extended periods of time.
Insulating Layer: The insulating layer is the outdoor clothing layer above the base layer. Like in the base layer, non-cotton fabrics are recommended for this layer. The main purpose of this layer is to maintain heat and wick sweat from the body. The most recommended fabrics for the insulating layer are polyester fleece and wool. When picking a clothing item for this layer, be sure that it has zippers or openings where heat can still escape. Too much heat can be harmful too.
Outer Layer: The outer/shell layer is an important layer because it is the layer that shields you from harsh outdoor elements. It is ideal to buy rain jackets and sweat pants that are waterproof. When buying, also require garments that are breathable so that perspiration vapor can escape.
Don’t forget to wear socks for your feet. Wool is a popular sock material among hikers because it gives warmth and is very comfortable. It is also a good protective garment that prevent blisters.
